Msc European Forestry by Ernst van der Maaten

In 2003 I started my Bachelor in Forest and Nature Conservation at Wageningen University. I finished my Bachelor in the regular 3 years and had to choose a Master programme afterwards.
Of course I could enrol in the normal ‘follow-up’-programme MSc Forest and Nature Conservation, but I decided to start in the double-degree Master programme European Forestry. This ‘double-degree’ means that the students are working for two different MSc-titles at the same time, for me: MSc Forest and Nature Conservation and MSc European Forestry.

MSc European Forestry (MSc EF) is a 2-year international Master programme that is focusing on the international dimension of sustainable forest management issues. MSc EF is co-organized by a consortium of 6 European universities: University of Joensuu (Finland; coordinating university), University of Freiburg (Germany), Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences SLU (Sweden), University of Lleida UdL (Spain), University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences Vienna BOKU (Austria) and Wageningen University.
All partner-universities together organize the programme and contribute to different parts of the curriculum. For example, I started my first year at a field-station in Garpenberg (Sweden), where professors and lecturers from the different partner-universities were flying-in to give lectures.
In my first year MSc EF I followed courses in Finland and Sweden, I did a traineeship in Germany and had excursions in Spain, France, Germany and Austria. Altogether, this experience was really invaluable! Last month I could even share my international experiences during the SILVA-congress in Freiburg (Germany). My poster and power point presentation are giving you more information about my experiences during the first year of MSc European Forestry. You can also look at the website: http://gis.joensuu.fi/mscef, and feel always free to contact me at: ernst.vandermaaten@wur.nl.
In the second year MSc EF, which is starting right now, I will write a thesis about “Physiological responses of individual tree species to Climate change” and attend elective courses at Wageningen University.
