Student life

The town of Wageningen is an excellent base for your stay in the Netherlands. Students and guests enjoy a pleasant study environment, opportunities to exchange expertise, a wide range of accommodations and many cultural and recreational facilities. Its location near the centre of the Netherlands makes it an ideal base from which to explore the rest of the country. The cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague are only an hour away by train or by car. Many other European cities are also only a few hours travel from Wageningen. Wageningen is built on 'bicycle scale'. All university facilities and the city centre are within cycling distance. Most people speak English, so it is easy to communicate with the locals. There are historic and modern buildings, high-rise student flats, works of art and botanical gardens, adding to the diversity in Wageningen. Wageningen truly becomes the focus of the Netherlands during annual events such as the national Liberation Day celebration and the Rhine-town Jazz Festival.

Student Services
Wageningen University offers students a variety of services. The student information desk provides general information about study programmes. The Central Student Administration, the Dean of Students and the Student Health Service are part of the Student Service Centre. The Central Student Administration can be consulted about visas, residence permits, insurance and financial matters. The Dean of Students provides confidential advice on practical and personal matters, on study problems and acts as a mediator. The Student Health Service provides information and advice on many health issues.

Accommodations

Most students live in one of the student apartment buildings managed by 'Idealis', the corporation for student housing. These accommodations are intended only for single students. Rooms contain basic furniture such as a bed, desk plus chair and a wardrobe. There are also accomodations for rent in the private sector.

Study Associations
All study programmes of Wageningen University have their own study associations. When you move to another city, not to speak of another country, everything is brand new to you. The associations will help you find your way in the city, give advice about your studies and how to make friends. But they also organize lectures, excursions, dinners and parties that are relevant to this study.

The study association of Forest and Nature Conservation is
WSBV Sylvatica.

International Student Organisations
Several organisations offer a wide range of activities and services specifically for international students. The International Students Organisation (ISOW) is a social organisation and the International Students Panel (ISP) represents students' interests at Wageningen University.

Cultural, Outdoor and Night Life

Wageningen's 35,000 inhabitants enjoy a thriving cultural and social life. Theatres, cinemas, student clubs, bars, night clubs and restaurants offer the visitor the elegance of a city with the safe environment of a rural village. The many international guests contribute to the international atmosphere. Wageningen is delightfully 'green', being surrounded by farmland, forests, nature reserves and the summer meadows of the Rhine river.

Sports

Those who believe in a 'healthy mind in a healthy body' can make use of the excellent sport facilities in Wageningen. University Sports Centre 'De Bongerd' has a gym, playing fields, tennis and squash courts an indoor swimming pool and a brand new athletics track. A typical university sport like rowing can also be practiced on the river Rhine.

Religion

Wageningen is an international and intercultural community where the paths of many people cross and religious and cultural heritages are deeply respected. All the major faiths - Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam - are represented in Wageningen.
